Amidst the gloomy outlook over the past few days (being down with flu and all) I received some good news which cheered me up a little. I submitted 4 images for the International Photography Awards (IPA) a few months back, of which 2 of them received Honorable Mention! Obviously it is disappointing not to get the top prizes but considering there were nearly 15,000 submissions from 103 countries across the globe. Coming up against so many top photographers worldwide and appearing in the honorable mention list ain’t too shabby anymore if you ask me :)

IPA is a sister-effort of the Lucie Foundation, where the top three winners are announced at the annual Lucie Awards gala ceremony. The Foundation’s mission is to honor master photographers, to discover new and emerging talent and to promote the appreciation of photography. Since 2003, IPA has had the privilege and opportunity to acknowledge and recognize contemporary photographers’ accomplishments in this specialized and highly visible competition. Visit www.photoawards.com for more details.

Here are the 2 shots that got into the Honorable Mention list.

Honorable Mention in People – Children category for the winning entry “Joy”

Honorable Mention in People – Wedding category for the winning entry “Unwavering Love”

Alot of my peers and couples always ask me…

Michael, why don’t you do more pre-wedding/bridals? It’s good for you. Better portfolio, less work (most of the time), less stress = easier money.

Which is true to a certain extent,  cos if I am using logic and being smart about my career, I would/should go full steam into pre-wedding/bridals instead. However, sometimes in life, it ain’t all about money and it ain’t all about fame. Sometimes, it’s for the love of the game.

In my case, my game is to capture the unadulterated moments in time on the biggest day of their lives! That longing look, a loving embrace or the warm smile, which my couples would look back fondly upon years later and remember why they are meant for each other.

I kid you not that I get a serious high from grabbing these images!

I guess, it’s probably gotta do with my street shooting background. Lotsa walking, climbing, prone-ing, waiting, all for the perfect composition with the right subject that happens to pass me by. Much like how someone would sit and wait for hours on end, to get a fish on a hook. The wait feels like an eternity, but when I get it right, it is my heaven.

Yes, covering actual wedding days is hard work, no doubt about it. And if I am being completely honest, not every wedding is a blast, but therein lies the challenge, to wait for that one single moment of magic. Those who know me will know that I am a very patient man and i will wait for that, for the love of the game.

Photoshop is a very powerful tool. With strong basics and a good vision, you can do wonders. But what photoshop should not do, is to cover up the inadequacies in our technical abilities.

It is rather easy nowadays to produce cross-processed (lomo like) images or images with a textured layer over it. Most times, it can be done with a single click of a button. I love the looks too actually and will sometimes apply such processing to my personal collection of images. However, despite the advances in digital darkroom technologies, I always believe we should not forget the basics of photography. Reading of light, exposure, composition etc. Just because a textured layer on top of an overexposed (blown) image can cover the flaw doesn’t mean we should just photograph with our eyes closed.

Now i am not one who will profess that I am technically sound, because I certainly am not. But i am willing and trying to improve each day, and I also hope all the budding photographers out there can do likewise. Processing can sometimes save a bad image, to a certain extent. But imagine what it can do to a properly exposed and composed one!

We can always get better and we should always strive to be better! :)

With this, I am also launching my “Before & After” series. Everyone is used to seeing the touched up versions on my blog or on Facebook but what about the initial RAW file? The pre-processed shots! Well, I am gonna be posting the unedited raw image in comparison to the processed ones every now and then. So check back soon to see the amazing transformations (ok lar.. maybe not so amazing but they are nice enough! hahaha). Here’s a preview…

I was so engrossed in covering the wedding and doing up the express highlights that I’d forgotten to say Happy Birthday to my dear ol Sis! So here’s a happy belated birthday to you Wen!

My wife and I have decided to embark on our 2nd honeymoon to Paris, in May 2010 & we would like to invite you lovebirds to walk down the streets of Old Paris with us, as we breathe in the romance and capture the charms of one of the most lovely city in the world.

We are offering a fantastic package for couples who wish to have their Bridal / Casual Portrait Sessions in the City of Lights. How fantastic you might ask? Well, let’s just say that, since we are going there with or without you, the photographer’s airfare is pretty much out of the equation. Sounds good? Well it is! haha

Do note though that slots are limited as we are taking up a maximum of 3 couples only at the end of our personal trip, with the photoshoot dates estimated to be between 15 – 18 May.

For those interested, drop me a MAIL immediately as we will be confirming our flights before the end of February.
